Track Focus: The policies driving public transport to net zero

With ambitious targets to meet, public transport is moving towards a carbon neutral world. At the UITP Hamburg Summit on 15-18 June 2025, the world’s public transport professionals will hold four days of activities and discussions covering the most important topics in the public transport sector. And that includes the policies driving us towards net zero cities.
What are the policies driving net zero cities?
Cutting emissions is just one part of becoming a net zero city. In essence, what is needed is a plan that considers everything, from governance to financing, pricing, energy, infrastructure, and more.
And that means working together across sectors to align strategies and share best practices. We can only be sustainable together!
That’s where the congress sessions at the UITP Summit come in. Across 6 session tracks, learn from hundreds of speakers from around the globe who will be discussing the most important topics in public transport, including the policies driving us towards net zero.
5 net zero discussions you can expect at the UITP Summit 2025:
Embedding a sustainable strategy
Net zero success comes from integrating sustainability into the heart of our organisations. That means things like clear reporting and frameworks so that decisions can be better made with sustainability in mind. Discover more on integrating the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals – and find out the progress of the public transport sector.
Sustainable finance
Green financing is growing in popularity – and this could be a key lever to enable public transport’s sustainable transition.
Sustainable supply chains
To be net zero from top to bottom, public transport needs transparent and sustainable supply chains. Indeed, working closely working our procurement partners is essential.
Successful delivery of large infrastructure projects
Construction makes up 37% of global carbon emissions, the biggest share for any single sector. So, for public transport it’s crucial that we complete big infrastructure projects in-budget and on-time. And our UITP Summit host Hamburg is a great example of sustainable construction!
The new U5 metro line is being built using low-carbon materials and sustainable processes, cutting emissions by 70% when compared to conventional methods. Learn more insights like this about public transport in Hamburg in our report The Future of Mobility is in Hamburg!
Shared and automated mobility
Shared mobility and automated mobility are well-placed to provide the kind of flexible services that can replace private car journeys. Given that, understanding the threats and opportunities of these transformative mobility systems is key to learning how to best utilise its potential to drive net zero cities.
What else is UITP doing on net zero cities?
Alongside a group of 33 partners, UITP participates in NetZeroCities, a research project to support cities achieve climate neutrality. Find out more about the project.
